Isla Mujeres

Where to begin... I don't want to distract the casual reader with endless whiney verbiage about the trip. The point of an island is, well, that it's an island. A little piece of land surrounded on all sides by beaches. Isla Mujeres was a fishing village for centuries before Cancun was built (in 1970). Some of the locals have lived there for generations, but the island is changing rapidly. Ginger and I were there 2 years ago and we could see the stealthy buildup of capital here. More big condos. More cool houses all over the island owned by Americans (yep, mainly Americans). And rumors of...gulp...The Evil Empire (Wal-Mart). But my visual blog-tour will focus on beaches. So, here are two pictures from the ferry dock. One of me with some fishing/snorkling tour boats and one of G in front of the cutesy dock building (note the absolutely Mexican flags above the streets in the background). The little flags are called papél picado and you'll see them all over Mexico and in the Women's Studies Grad Student office at UA; a little present I left for their enjoyment.
