Chac Palace and more
Once you get to the main side of the road, the Kabah ruins are just beautiful. I seem to use the word beautiful a lot. But it's hard to get around that description when writing about mayan ruins. Chac is/was the rain god. Or maybe I should say the principle rain god. He (yep, he's male) is usually depicted with a big nose like an elephant trunk (but the archaeologists say it's a stylized crocodile nose) and goggle eyes. The goggle eyes are possibly an influence from Teotihuacan (at least I have an archaeologist friend who argued that in her dissertation, and she makes a convincing arguement.) But G and I were in doggie-heaven at these ruins. They haven't been roped off from tourists yet, so we could climb around and take as many pictures as we wanted. Until we ran out of space in the camera. Then we had to ditch some mediocre pictures so we could take more.
