Grandfather Mountain

I can't believe I haven't posted these pictures yet!!!! I must be really busy with school this semester, huh? Here are Scooter, Al, and EJ, the first time I met any of them. And these Scottish Heritage celebraters are what make these festivals fun. I'll post some pictures of ME and Miss Naincy next. This was in July and it was freaking COLD at night up on the mountain. And it was cold during the daytime. And it was dreary and rainy- lot's of 'atmosphere'. We plan to make it an annual event!

EGSA Halloween PArty 2009

The EGyptology Graduate Student Association annual Halloween costume party was well attended and a good time was had by all. Especially me. Because I got drunker than anybody else :) But these are just pictures of everybody else. The first years are all so CUTE! Dr. C was a spider web and Dr. Brand was a Roman. Dr. Onstine was a pharaoh and Mariam didn't show up because she had to move or something. There were a lot of Greeks and Romans, a couple of pirates, a princess, a cowgirl, Laura Croft, Miss Piggy, and a dapper Sweeney Todd. Dr. Onstine graciously let us trash her house for the party. I had a designated driver. It was all good :)

We HAD to do it. We just HAD to rent one of the fairy-tale Cinderella Pumpkin coaches for one hour downtown. It was beautiful!
We brought aboard a big bag o' beer and some blankets and all bundled in. I took way too many pictures, but I couldn't help myself.

We left the restaurant and hit the Big-Ass Beer hut again. Then went into a Voo-Doo shop. Luis noticed which of the magical potions were apparently the most in demand. Hilarious. And we posed again as a group.

We went to eat at some blues music restaurant place whose name I can't remember. Here we are. Everybody except for Raymond-Waymond-Whiney. I don't know how I didn't get his picture here. Maybe because he was sitting just to my right.

Beale Street - Night 1

This was my first trip to Beale Street. It's festive and fun, but it wasn't packed with people that night. Maybe we were there too early. But it turns out that Amy and Ginger share a mild exhibitionist streak that makes for some damn good photography.

Cocktails at the Peabody

We stayed for a little while at the Peabody. More Peace Corps people arrived: Amy and Marilyn. Then my friend Steffie made it. So we went up to the roof to see the ducks in their "Duck Palace." I had to put that in quotes. As you will see, it is cute but hardly a palace.

Peabody Ducks

The world famous, Peabody Duck march. Every day at 10am and 5pm the duck-master shepherds the small sord (a group of ducks on the ground according to Wikipedia) from their duck palace on the roof to the fountain in the lobby via the elevator. This is pretty cool. I had the perfect spot, too, until tragedy struck. I was rudely shoved aside when an elderly woman (who was standing up just fine it looked to me) had her family shove a chair in front of me so she could sit and watch. I had to photodocument around her. But I guess it was all okay.
